Ceramics by Philip Mahn

Ceramic Studio

An old barn was converted to studio space. The space accommodates multiple wheels, electric kiln, pug mill mixer, and a photo booth.

Wood Fired Kiln

The Potters Field has two wood fired kilns on site. Wood fired kilns have been around since the ancients first discovered the ceramic process. There are easier methods of firing in this modern era, but there is an unmatched surface variation to ceramic work fired using this traditional wood fired method.

A small coffin style kiln was built in order to experiment with the lower temperature wood fired process. This kiln was invaluable to the process of discovery and experimentation of low to mid range clay bodies and surfaces. This kiln was fired for about 7 years.

The desire to make larger scale work dictated that a larger kiln was needed. In 2018 the process began to build a 350 cubic foot cross draft kiln and accompanying Kiln shed (20Ftx40Ft). The kiln has an inside width/length of 8 feet. The arch is 8 feet diameter and floor to top of arch is 6 feet. The first firing took place in June of 2023.

Studio Gallery

The Potters Field Gallery is a 350 square foot space attached to the working ceramic studio. It features works made and/or fired at the Potters Field. The Gallery is structured to be open to the public on a self-guided basis. Special exhibits will be featured periodically, otherwise recent works will be on display and for sale.
