Who we are

A Potters Field is a concept space to make, fire, and exhibit ceramic work. The space is located on Sweeney Creek in Florence Montana.

Clay is the essential ingredient for all ceramic work. Historically, clay was sourced from regional deposits layered down over geological time. The harvesting of the local clay deposits left behind hollowed cavities where clay was dug and processed for making pottery. These clay rich places were often referred to as the potter’s field. The connection to clay and the making is the essence of the Potters Field.

Today, much of the potter’s material is commercially mined and sold in bags. But there is a distinct connection for the native clays that are regionally available to modern day potters. Typically, about 20% of our clay is sourced from our local region. The use of the local sourced materials is part of the experimental development of surfaces using ancient firing processes.
